Victoria Derbyshire, 52, left some viewers in stitches earlier this week when she tried to offer co-star Jessica Plummer a hug when she was left feeling a little overwhelmed. Following the tender moment, Victoria’s son Ollie took to social media to apologise on behalf of his mum for her pronunciation of the Welsh word for cuddle, “cwtch”.

The teenager defended his mother, and also revealed that Victoria had been trying hard to perfect her Welsh pronunciation during the recent lockdown.

Sharing the message with Victoria’s 134,800 Twitter followers, Ollie threw his support behind his mum and argued that she was trying her best.

“My Mum spent a lot of time trying to learn a few Welsh words in quarantine,” Ollie wrote.

“However we are also aware of how wrong she’s pronouncing the word #Cwtch!!!

Ollie added: “Please forgive her- she’s doing her best!!!! -Ollie(16)”

The youngster also finished off the tweet with several hashtags in support of his mum: #ImACeleb #TeamVic @GwrychTrust.

It had been during a conversation in camp at Gwrych Castle earlier this week that Victoria had attempted to show off some of her Welsh language skills.

While comforting tearful EastEnders star Jessica, Victoria tried to replace the word cuddle with “cwtch”.

The term, more frequently said to be used in South Wales, usually refers to a cuddle or a hug.

While some viewers found her Welsh pronunciation awkward, others praised the star for her attempt at speaking Welsh.

“Let’s have a cwtch!” @vicderbyshire my new/current favourite liking the whole group so far, hope these good vibes run through! #imaceleb #cwtches,” wrote one follower.

“Is it annoying anyone how @vicderbyshire is pronouncing ‘Cwtch’ – bless her she’s trying but god it’s irritating!!! #welshies,” added another.

Despite facing some backlash, Victoria has also received quite a positive response to her Welsh language attempt.

Victoria recently pulled on heartstrings when she burst into tears as the camp received gifts from their loved ones.

During the moving clip, the presenter opened up a package that featured a picture of her two sons and she quickly became teary-eyed.

“When you see a photograph of them it’s really… it just reminds you and it takes you back home,” Victoria said during the ITV show.

Victoria was also comforted by her co-stars, who told the star that she had a “gorgeous” family.

Several other cast members also appeared emotional as they sat around the firepit opening gifts from home.

Sir Mo Farah actually left the other stars in tears after he opened his luxury item and discovered it was a beautiful drawing from his children.
