Its like the world is about to end every five minutes. You sit in the back of the bus and take a long drink from the bottle of vodka that is propped up against the seat. You cant think of a reason not to stay here, not when the last thing you want to think about is leaving. But theres just something about the bus ride that just feels right. You look out the window, and see the hospital buildings that the buses pass. They seem so close, almost like an arms reach away. Its like youre really close to normal people. You really should be out there with them, not surrounded by a bunch of people you barely know. Your parents always said you had an edge, but that was a fleeting, naive sense of freedom, never a solid core. You dont know whether it was the alcohol or the stress of the day, but you found yourself driving through the forest as the sun was starting to set. Its a long way off and, really, you dont really want to get out of here. Youre not a tree slinger or a hiker or even a bird lover. You dont even know where the next town is. Ve heard about the area is its a place where no one lives. This was supposed to be your first day of high school, and youve already given up half of it for the privilege of a life of a party animal. Ve barely done anything worth mentioning. The sky has already grown dark, and you have a sudden feeling of dread. You walk up the stairs and into the bus, taking a seat opposite of where the first kid sat this morning. The bus ride is uneventful, except for that time that your door was slammed open and someone was already walking down the aisle with a knife in hand. She was looking for her brother, but you just sat there looking out the window.
