IndieBeauty ExpoA long-simmering battle over a popular tourist spot on the citys waterfront between real estate developers and activists is headed to court after an activist was fatally shot Tuesday night. The shooting took place around 6 p. Near the intersection of Hazeldean and Esplanade avenues when John Jack OConnor, 45, was shot in the back by a man who was apparently trying to break into the rear of a parked car. OConnor, a long-time activist known as The Old Man of Hazeldean, had been in the front of a small group of people who say they are trying to stop construction of an apartment building on the waterfront. I saw an older man with a walker being pushed into the front car, a witness told CBC News in a phone interview Tuesday night. The witness said the man who shot OConnor walked away from the area after the shooting. I think he was trying to get away from the whole situation, the witness recalled. Police are still looking into the incident and have not released a description of the suspect or any possible motive. The old man with the walker was taken to Sunnybrook hospital and died later at Princess Margaret hospital. When he died he was on his way to a meeting of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Organization. City councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is calling on the city to take a more active role in curbing development in the area. This is a critical area of the city, Wong-Tam told CBC. The city did an awful lot of planning for this area and in the last few years there has been huge change and thats putting more stress on the area. The Old Man of Hazeldean is a very important symbolic figure in the Downtown Eastside. Downtown Vancouver councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam says the death of the Old Man of Hazeldean reminds her of the concerns over development in the area. CBC, A representative from the Toronto-based developer behind the apartment project in question declined to speak to CBC News. OConnor, who was known to be a fierce advocate for the area in the past, was also known for his sharp tongue.
