Sheridan Smith admits she was a dweeb at school ahead of new show The Teacher

Actress Sheridan Smith may be one of our most glamorous TV stars, always looking amazing on the red carpet, but she's revealed that if you flashback to her childhood years, it’s a different story.

The star – who earlier this month broke up with her boyfriend Alex – has talked about her childhood on the eve of starring in a Channel 5 drama about a teacher and pupil relationship.

And Sheridan has made the surprise confession that she was, in fact, “a bit of a dweeb”.

When asked if the filming reminded her of her school days, Sheridan replied: “ It was funny to see these kids because they had this sass about them, and I was so not like that at school, I was such a dweeb!”

The 40-year-old went to South Axholme Comprehensive School and also studied dance at the Joyce Mason School of Dancing. When she was 16, she ditched her job working in a burger van in Doncaster to move to London and join the National Youth Music Theatre, where her career really kicked off.

Talking of that time in the documentary Sheridan Smith: Becoming a Mum, she said: “I was more confident when I first moved to London,” says Smith, quietly in tears at one point. “I was young and fearless and open. I wish I was still that girl.”

But the actress, who became a mum to son Billy in May 2020 during lockdown, was also interested to see how school has changed from back in her day.

Talking about filming the school scenes for the drama, The Teacher, she said: “Seeing all the kids on their phones made me laugh because when I was at school we didn't have mobiles, let alone social media.

“Thank God they didn't have social media when I was there, but these kids now are so wised up and tech savvy. It was just interesting to see that and then to remember what we were like, we were just playing conkers!”

In The Teacher, Sheridan plays Jenna, a popular teacher with a chaotic private life. She is emotionally troubled and uses alcohol and sleeping around as a way to feel better.

Her wild partying lifestyle away from the classroom helps Jenna escape her demons, but it’s dangerous behaviour, particularly as she is prone to blackouts. And her world comes crashing down when, following a night out to celebrate a promotion, she is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old pupil, Kyle.

Did she really commit the crime that could end her career? And if Jenna is innocent, why would Kyle set out to destroy her?

Sheridan reveals that she couldn’t turn the part of Jenna down after reading the script. “I was gripped,” says the 40-year-old.

And viewers will be too.

The Teacher is on nightly from Tuesday 1 February at 9pm on Channel 5. Stay up to date with all the latest on your favourite stars by signing up to OK!'s daily celebrity newsletter.
