Great British Bake Off teaser trailer
The Great British Bake Off is back tonight to provide comfort viewing for the nation.
But there will be something different awaiting viewers when they tune in to Channel 4 at 8pm.
Alison Hammond is set to make her Bake Off presenting debut as she takes over the reins from Matt Lucas, who stepped back after the last series came to a close.
Speaking ahead of the show in an interview with The Guardian, Noel Fielding, shared one of his concerns about hosting the beloved show with a new presenter.
He said: “When a show is successful for so long, you get criticised if you don’t try new things. When you do, people aren’t comfortable with that either. You have to keep it fresh but familiar. It’s a tricky balance.”

In the joint interview between Alison, 48, and Noel, 50, Alison joined in by adding: “Bake Off do listen to their fans, If viewers say it would be nice to go back to basics, they take that on board.”
Noel has been part of the Bake Off team for seven years since the show made its move from its original BBC slot over to Channel 4. The original hosts Mel and Sue, along with Mary Berry, left the show, leaving Paul Hollywood as only one of the original four to remain on the show.
When the show moved to Channel 4, it launched with Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig as the presenters. Discussing the pairing during the interview, Noel described the duo as being “like a classic double act.”

Sandi left the show after three years and was replaced by comedian Matt Lucas.
Matt stood down at the end of the last series, releasing a statement that said: “It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers.
“But it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.
“So, after three series and 51 episodes, I am cheerfully passing the baguette on to someone else.”
Alison who is Noel’s third co-host, commented: “People wouldn’t necessarily put us together – but it’s like my chocolate brownie recipe. It just works”, referencing the classic dish she has made on This Morning.
During the interview, Noel also references Alison’s warmth and empathy, which he thinks will be a big hit with the viewers and also claims there’s a lot of crying in this series from both hosts.
This series of Bake Off will see the show go back to basics after complaints from viewers that the challenges were getting too complicated.
Richard McKerrow, boss at Love Productions who make the long-running show, told The Media Podcast: “I’d be the first to hold up our hands and say I feel the last series was not our strongest,”
“You’ve got to take a look and go, ‘Sh*t, are the challenges too complicated?’ We’re looking very, very, very hard at making sure it’s as good a series as it can be.”
