Matthew McConaughey and son Levi announce support for Maui
Matthew McConaughey’s wife has admitted she used to have a toxic relationship with her mother-in-law Mary Kathlene ‘Kay’ McCabe.
Camila Alves, 41, gave a rare insight into their intial rocky beginnings during a new episode of Southern Living’s Biscuits & Jam podcast.
The Brazilian model married the Oscar winner, 53, in 2012, and they welcomed three children.
However, Kay, who the family have nicknamed “Ma Mac,” began “testing” the model shortly after she first began dating the Hollywood actor in 2006.
Alves said of the 91-year-old: “She did all these things when I first came in the picture, right? She was really testing me. I mean, really testing me.”

She also said Kay would call her by all of McConaughey’s ex-girlfriends’ names and would speak in broke Spanish with her, “kind of putting [me] down a bit. I mean, all kinds of stuff.”
However, one incident changed her relationship with her mother-in-law for good.
Kay finally accepted Alves as part of the family after she landed a modeling job in Istanbul.
After she got an extra first-class ticket and a free stay at a hotel, Alves told Kay: “Ma Mac, you’re gonna come with me.”
During their journey to Istanbul, Kay told Alves “all these stories and putting all these things in my head.”
The mother-of-three said: “When we landed, I was like, ‘Okay, all right. Let me buckle up. Let me get ready for this situation.'”

She added: “About day three, I was taking her to her room, and she got into this whole other thing that it’s not my place to share, and she starts crying, and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ You know, ‘Ma Mac!’ and feeling so sorry. And as I put her to bed, I look at her and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh. She’s full of s**t.'”
Alves decided to stand up for herself.
She continued: “So I just [flipped] it on her and brought my spicy Brazilian, Latin side, and I let her have it. So I went back at her, and we had it back and forth, back and forth.”
The interaction wasn’t the best, but Alves earned Kay’s respect in the end.
Alves said: “She just looked at me and she was like, ‘Okay. Now you’re in.’ All she wanted was for me to fight back.”
The pair have had “the most amazing” relationship ever since.
Even when it sometimes get “tricky,” the women “always end with a good laugh and a joke.”
Now, Alves has so much respect for her mother-in-law, and vice versa.
In 2020, the pair discussed their close bond on The Drew Barrymore Show.
When Alves began dating her son, Kay said they were “testing each other” but the model added: “Well I’ll say more you were testing me.”
Alves shouldn’t feel too bad about not getting along with Kay at first; McConaughey didn’t speak to his mother for eight years after she continually leaked their private conversations to the media.
