Madonna‘s “Celebration Tour” across the U.K., Europe and North America, features more than 40 songs, according to her musical director Stuart Price.
In an interview with the BBC, Price described that the tour, which will mark the Queen of Pop’s 40th anniversary, as “a documentary through her vast career” that will show off more than 40 songs from the star’s storied and celebrated back catalogue.
“A greatest hit doesn’t have to be a song. It can be a wardrobe, it can be a video, or a statement,” said Price, who produced Madonna’s 2005 album Confessions On A Dance Floor.
Many hits will be played in full, some will be interpolated into other songs, and still more will be used as “bridges” between acts, according to Price. He suggested a ballpark figure of 25 songs being performed in full, with elements of 20 others appearing in some form.
During her tour, Madonna will be relying on original multi-track recordings and will not be joined by a live band onstage.
“There are live musicians that perform at different parts of the show,” Price said. “But what we realised is that the original recordings are our stars. Those things can’t be replicated and can’t be recreated, so we decided just to embrace that.”
Price added that Madonna is always keen to recontextualise stuff and find ways to take strong original messages and see how they resonate in the era that we’re in now.
“A lot of the powerful moments [in this show] are to do with where the music intersects with something that society was going through, especially something emotional, like the Aids crisis. Those moments are incredibly powerful,” he said.
Madonna’s “Celebration Tour” kicked off in London over the weekend and will visit cities across Europe until the North American leg kicks off in December.
