Lion King Actor Suggests That Meghan Markle Lied About South Africans Reactions to Her Wedding

Dr. John Kani, the only South African actor in the Disney movie’s cast, reacts to the Duchess’ comments that South Africans celebrated her wedding to Prince Harry as big as how they celebrated Nelson Mandela’s freedom.

AceShowbiz -Controversy surrounding Meghan Markle‘s recent claims, in which she compared her royal wedding to Nelson Mandela’s freedom, has yet to be over. Dr. John Kani, the only South African actor in “The Lion King (2019)” cast, spoke out about the Duchess of Sussex’s comments, insinuating that she didn’t tell the truth about their alleged conversation back in 2019.

“I have never met Meghan Markle,” Kani, who voiced Rafiki in the Disney remake, told Daily Mail. “This seems like something of a faux pas by her. I am the only South African member of the cast and I did not attend the premiere in London.” The actor went on to say that Markle must be “misremembering” things that occurred on the night she attended the premiere.

The wife of Prince Harry recently came under fire following her remarks in an interview with The Cut. In the sit-down, she revealed that when she attended a “Lion King” premiere in London back in 2018, a male South African cast member told her how people in South Africa celebrated her marriage to Prince Harry to the same extent as Nelson Mandela’s release from prison in 1990.

Recalling the moment, the former “Suits” actress said, “He looked at me, and he’s just like light. He said, ‘I just need you to know: When you married into this family, we rejoiced in the streets the same we did when Mandela was freed from prison.’ “

The comments didn’t sit well with one of Mandela’s grandsons. Slamming Markle, Zwelivelile “Mandla” Mandela told the Daily Mail on Tuesday, August 30, “Madiba’s celebration was based on overcoming 350 years of colonialism with 60 years of a brutal apartheid regime in South Africa.” A member of Parliament and chief of Nelson’s Mvezo tribe, Zwelivelile continued, “It cannot be equated to as the same.”

He added, “We are still bearing scars of the past. But [Nelson Mandela’s celebrations were] a product of the majority of our people being brought out onto the streets to exercise the right of voting for the first time.”

South Africans also took to Twitter to drag the mom of two over her tone-deaf remarks by trending hashtag “#VoetsekMeghan” on Twitter in South Africa. In Afrikaans, Voetsek means “go away” or “get lost.”
