Kate Garraway is set to spend Christmas in hospital, according to reports, after her husband Derek Draper allegedly suffered a "massive heart attack" which has left him "fighting for his life".
The Good Morning Britain host, 56, is said to have been spending "24 hours a day" by Derek's side and is "willing him on to win this latest battle for his life", following his reported heart attack earlier this month.
Derek, also 56, has been seriously ill since contracting coronavirus in the early days of the pandemic in 2020. Kate revealed in early December that Derek was back in hospital again, with reports regarding an alleged heart attack emerging days later.
Kate is yet to confirm if her husband has suffered a heart attack, but a source claimed Derek's latest health battle came as "a shock" as he had been "doing well".
A source close to the family told the Mirror: “Derek suffered a massive heart attack which has left him fighting for his life all over again. It was sudden and a shock as he had been doing well and was in great spirits, looking forward to Christmas at home with the family.
“We just hope there will be some more positive news soon as he has been in such a long and tough battle with his health. Kate’s only focus right now is Derek and her family.”
Kate has stopped all her TV and radio jobs to be with Derek, even taking time off from GMB, reports The Mirror.
Derek, who shares children Darcey, 17, and 14-year-old Billy with wife Kate, has been in and out of hospital many times over the past few years after he became seriously ill with coronavirus in 2020.
The writer fell into a coma and was put on a ventilator – becoming Britain's longest suffering Covid-19 patient as he spent 13 months in hospital. He came home from hospital in April 2021 but still needs care and help, as he struggles to get back to full health after first catching the virus.
Kate has been open about Derek's health battles over the past three years, having created two award-winning documentaries about the issues he's faced and the reality of their situation.
Writing in her recent memoir, The Strength Of Love: Embracing An Uncertain Future With Resilience And Optimism, Kate also spoke honestly of the mental and physical toll his up-and-down progress had taken on her.
Recalling a time Derek was “blue-lighted back to hospital with another life-threatening development”, she wrote, “Again, I’d had the fear of losing him – the crisis just went on and on.”
