Johnny Depp jets to Sheffield to join pal on stage as he awaits verdict in Amber Heard trial

Johnny Depp jetted over to the UK for a surprise gig in Sheffield as he joined his longtime friend and music collaborator Jeff Beck on-stage as a special guest.

The Hollywood A-Lister and fan-favourite actor shocked his fans when he strolled onto the stage dressed in a much-less formal get-up after six weeks being filmed in the Fairfax County, Virginia courthouse.

The 58 year old star has been embroiled in a defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard, who has accused him of repeatedly abusing her both with physical and sexual violence during the course of their marriage. Johnny has denied the claims.

The centre of the defamation trial comes as a result of Amber's op-ed piece for The Washington Post, which was published in 2018 and referred to the "domestic violence" the Aquaman actress claimed she had suffered. Amber didn't name Johnny in the piece.

Johnny is suing his ex-wife for $50million, and Amber, 36, is counter-suing the star for $100million.

The trial wrapped up with closing arguments from both sides' lawyers on Friday 27 May, and the jury went straight into deliberation.

But while it's expected the jurors will reach a verdict over the next few days, fans were left completely taken-aback that the Pirates of the Caribbean star had kept his concert commitment in place.

Some expected the star would have wanted to remain in the US, and in Virginia in particular, in order to be close by for when the judge calls court back into session.

Snapped by lots of fans as he performed on stage at Sheffield City Hall, Johnny donned a black and white checked blazer, a white unbuttoned shirt, grey trousers and a black beret.

It was a far cry from his now-signature court look – which included a smart jacket, varying degrees of coloured waistcoats, and patterned ties.

The actor has also worn his blonde locks in a sleek ponytail every day since the beginning of the trial, but with his acoustic guitar in hand, he opted to wear his hair loose on stage.

Fans could also glimpse his tinted glasses, myriad of tattoos and an array of silver and gold rings adorning his fingers.

"Wow! Johnny sounds a little like Bowie, Lennon, and Hendrix!," one person gushed over the performance.

"I jumped out of the bath and went to Sheffield City Hall when I heard Johnny Depp was there," another fan admitted.

On 27 May 2016, Amber took out a temporary restraining order against her former spouse, but later withdrew her claim he had abused her.

The former couple, who were only married for 16 months, then agreed to a $7million divorce settlement in 2017.

Both stars are now claiming defamation and have gone into detail over how their careers have suffered since Amber's op-ed and Johnny's lawyer Adam Waldman's comments about Amber.

In his final testimony, Johnny reiterated his desire was for the "truth" to be revealed as he claimed he has never once "hit a woman" and had never hit or raped Amber.

The trial is expected to wrap up this week.
