First look at the new Big Brother diary room
Big Brother will return on Sunday with a brand-new house and a brand-new channel as it makes its long-awaited debut on ITV. As 16 housemates prepare to make the famous house their home for six weeks, I was lucky enough to take a pre-show tour just 24 hours before they move in.
We were first guided through the garden which is a brightly coloured oasis complete with fluorescent lighting, a seating area in the shape of Big Brother’s famous eye and plenty of greenery – even though it’s all made of paper.
The outdoor space, which is smaller than I had expected, is tranquil in a way thanks to the bubbling sound of the small jacuzzi and the whirring of the surrounding cameras which will capture the housemates’ every move.
We were then guided into the living room and kitchen area, which is the most spacious room in the house.
I’m told that the stain-prone blue suede sofas, which also form the shape of an eye, will be where nominations, live evictions and weekly shopping tasks will take place.

The décor, complete with lamps, plants and pigeon-shaped ornaments, continues into the mezzanine floor which overlooks the colourful abode.
On the way to the bedroom, the only way in is through a long rainbow archway.
The room is crammed full of double and single beds and on either side sits an enclosed romantic-looking sleeping area illuminated in pinks and reds.
While Big Brother bosses did not divulge the surprises that are to come, it is almost certain that the housemates will be forced to sleep alongside a stranger.

In this house, there is no privacy. Even the simple act of taking a shower or bath alone is impossible thanks to the side-by-side showers and bath all in the same room. There are even cameras in the toilet.
The only area the housemates can be sure of some solitude is in the iconic Diary Room, complete with one of the biggest ever chairs in neon reds, yellows and blues.
However, the iconic space is in no way a calming area for the housemates to confess all. Once you sit on the giant eye, you are blinded by the glaring studio lights which sit over an intimidating camera pointing at you.
At first thought, you may wonder how anyone could be miserable in the rainbow-filled house, but after around an hour you feel the heat from the overpowering studio lights and the depleting oxygen thanks to the absence of windows. It is unbearable and seems like a nightmare, particularly when the mess starts to accumulate.
The thought of waking up in the relatively small bedroom alongside 15 snoring strangers, with no windows to get a blast of fresh air, I would have a meltdown.
In addition, you can predict that the bright and bold colours which initially made the house seem cheerful and retro, could begin to resemble the hotel from The Shining and drive the increasingly irritated housemates mad. I couldn’t last an hour – let alone six weeks.
And, with a lack of space to enjoy some much-needed solitude, you can be sure that the confined housemates will clash in no time.

Big Brother: The Launch will air on ITV1, ITV2, and ITVX at 9pm on October 8.
