Dylan said in a recent interview, Im a big believer in just not letting people control your life. I mean theres nothing worse than a depressed person that thinks theyre someone else, and I think the worst thing you can do is try to stop a person from feeling whatever way they want to feel. A few years ago, Dylan released the song Fortunate Son, which talks about his struggles with mental illness, and the song was received well by the mainstream media. One of the few times Dylan is actually open about his personal issues is on the cover of Rolling Stone where he discusses the struggles he faced with addiction. As Dylan explains, he has battled alcohol, drugs and mental illness, including a suicide attempt when he was 17. He said, When I was 17, I drank a whole jug of vodka straight up. I remember laying in my bedroom, I remember thinking, Fuck this. Then I got high for like six months straight and I couldnt figure out how I got high. Like when Im high, I feel like Im a different person. Dylan was born and raised in upstate New York and, like most teens, was obsessed with rock and roll. His first band was called the Hawks and he was a big fan of the likes of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. When he was 19, Dylan took off to London to start a new band. He was so successful there, he was called back to America and began to write and perform under the name Dylan, with a big nAfter his first album, Highway 61 Revisited, was a massive success, Dylan and his band recorded an LP entitled Blonde on Blonde and it included the hit song Knockin which was released in July of 1962 and sold over 5 million copies. The success of Blonde on Blonde led to an increase in Dylans celebrity, and he was featured on the front of the cover of Rolling Stone as a 21-year-old singer-song writer. Unfortunately, his fame and status as a rock icon also led to him facing the pressures of the music industry and he began to turn to drugs to cope: I used to take a bunch of pills and smoke marijuana at the same time. Id wake up feeling like death, then Id go to sleep thinking I was the luckiest man alive. Dylans drug use was linked to his personal struggles and eventually he quit alcohol. He explained, There was a period where Id smoke hashish and not eat, and I wasnt a happy person, I wasnt happy with myself, but I was trying to find a way to cope and get by.
