That might sound like hyperbole, but these words actually come from a post on Reddit with a link to a YouTube video of a woman talking about her experience with body dysmorphia. The woman in the video is a very successful model, and her description of her life is pretty great, and its pretty common for people with chronic illness to have successful careers, so its definitely not a rarity for her to have it, :As a young girl, I would lie in bed thinking how ugly I was and how people would never like me unless I was thin. I was embarrassed and ashamed to go to the shop because a stranger may think I was one of those models who looked like fat people and I would never be able to be liked. I would hide in my bedroom and hide because if I opened the door, I knew someone would say something horribly mean and then I would feel embarrassed for the rest of the day. When I was around seven, I couldnt stand my classmates calling me fathead. I was always teased for being short and looked like a boy. I thought everyone would like me if I was skinny. I hid behind my books and in my bed the rest of the day and night trying to block out the bullying. Finally, when I was in 7th grade, someone said to me, You know, you could be pretty if you lost a few pounds. I said, I hate you, you sick pervert. You dont have any idea what that feels like. In the post, the Redditor also talks about how she has been able to overcome her mental illness and the video shows her as a happy and successful person and how she even says shes happier than most people. Its worth noting that you can read about all the people in the video, if you want, and some of them have done great things and there are stories about others who got very sick and some who didnt, but the point is that this woman has a good life and is a model. There are people out there who dont have that life, and they dont have the life she has and their mental illnesses arent being addressed. At the very least, shes got some kind of mental illness that affects her life, and her voice needs to be heard. There is someone out there who has had the kind of life she has, and she wants to be heard.
