The singer/songwriter, whose hits include ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’ and ‘Open Your Eyes’, passed away at the age of 71 after struggling with health issues for the past six years.
AceShowbiz –Chance the Rapper is mourning the death of Bobby Caldwell. Upon learning of the “What You Won’t Do for Love” singer’s death, the “No Brainer” spitter took to social media to pay his final tribute to the “legend.”
Making use of Instagram on Wednesday, March 15, the 29-year-old shared a screenshot of his exchange with the late musician. “Wow, is this really u?” the emcee asked on September 13, 2022.
In response, Bobby replied, “Yes, it’s me. Thanks for thinking of me. I’ll be honored if you sample my song. All the best, Bobby.” Chance then wrote back, “You are such an inspiration to me. And many others.”
In the caption, Chance penned, “This never happens. I’ve never received a message from an artist thanking me for sampling their record.” He added, “This is a record that hasn’t even come out, and the legend himself reached out.”
“I was so excited to meet you, I have not felt broken like this at a strangers passing in so long,” the hip-hop artist further noted. “You are a true legend and incredible person who I know I will see one day. RIP THE GREAT BOBBY CALDWELL.”
Bobby passed away at the age of 71. Confirming the devastating news was his wife Mary Caldwell, who wrote on his official Twitter page, “Bobby passed away here at home. I held him tight in my arms as he left us.”
“I am forever heartbroken,” Mary lamented. “Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years. He had been ‘FLOXED,’ it took his health over the last 6 years and 2 months. Rest with God, my Love. -Mary Caldwell.”
Bobby’s hits include “What You Won’t Do For Love” and “Open Your Eyes”. The former track, which was released in 1978 on the debut album of the same name, ascended the Billboard 100 charts.
As for the latter track, it appears on his sophomore 1980 album, “Cat in the Hat”. Common sampled the song for his single “The Light” and John Legend covered it as well on his 2013 album “Love in the Future”.
