I still feel guilty, Mrs Phul tells you with a sad smile. As you and Mrs Phul talk, a young woman with a bright smile and a red, sunburned face approaches the table. She looks like it is from a rural town rather than a big city, like the one you grew up in. The woman is in her mid-20s, with an easy smile and wide eyes. She carries herself with confidence, while her eyes stay on you the entire time she talks to Mrs Phul. Oh, Im sure, Dik, Son, the place is wonderful. Great family there, all working to create a new life. Im sure they wont mind if I meet your family, Mrs Phul says. Mrs Phul then says, My husband, Mr Boonmee, is Mr Boonmee. Oh, its so wonderful to meet you, Dik, Son. You say in a bright tone, but you dont meet her eyes. No, its nice to meet you, too, she insists. You must be Mrs Phul, you say. My name is Mrs Phul, and Mr Boonmee is my husband. Now, do you want to go to the restaurant. You nod, but you dont look at her. You walk to the small restaurant, and there, in the restaurant, is a man and a woman. Mr and Mrs Phul are sitting side-by-side, at a table. You sit next to Mrs Phul, and she sits next to you. Do you want to meet my husband. He was raised to be a good man, and thats why he is so nice to me. Mrs Phul sits there with a smile back and a huge grin. Do you want to go outside for food. We have a nice restaurant just outside of our house.
