Amanda Abbingtons fiancé told her to walk away after he became paralysed

Amanda Abbington in tears as fiancé talks about his injuries

Amanda Abbington and America’s Got Talent’s Jonathan Goodwin became engaged days after meeting in 2021.

However, just weeks later, their whirlwind romance would soon take a horrific as Jonathan nearly died in a stunt gone wrong.

The escapologist, 43, had attempted to escape from a straitjacket while upside-down 30 feet in the air, suspended between two cars.

However, the cars were released too early and he was crushed between them as they caught fire.

Jonathan sustained many injuries including third-degree burns, a broken spine, a severed spinal cord, and two broken shoulder blades. He also shattered both legs and lost a kidney.

He was released from hospital in February 2022 but was left paralysed from the waist down.

Later that year, wheelchair-bound Jonathan appeared alongside Amanda, 51, on ITV’s Lorraine to discuss the impact of the accident.

He revealed: “I said you have a get out of jail free card, if you want to walk away, I understand.

“She told me not to be so stupid.”

The Sherlock actress added that they were “closer and tighter” than ever in the aftermath of the accident.

She explained: “We are closer and tighter than ever and we have this unspoken thing. We said the other day that we are the people that are going to say yes to stuff.

“Life’s too short; be in the moment and grab it with both hands because you don’t know what’s around the corner.

“He’s a total inspiration to me. He’s an idiot, I’m a wally so it’s fine. And all my friends and family love him, he’s very loveable.”

Jonathan will no doubt be supporting Amanda as she makes her Strictly Come Dancing debut in weeks.

The star will compete in the ballroom against the likes of Les Dennis, Adam Thomas, Zara McDermott and Angela Rippon for the coveted Glitterball Trophy.

According to reports, the new series will kick off on BBC One on September 23.
