Tom Hanks is willing to do whatever it takes to get to outer space – including cooking and cleaning: ‘I would probably sign up right now’
Tom Hanks has long obsessed with outer space, admitting in a new interview he’ll do practically anything to get there… including cooking and cleaning.
The 67-year-old actor – whose son Chet Hanks just joined the Surreal Life cast – opened up to The Daily Telegraph in a new interview, saying he’ll do whatever it takes.
The Apollo 13 star was actually invited to space on Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket, New Shepard, though he turned it down due to the exorbitant price.
‘I would like to be the guy in charge of serving food and making jokes to and from the moon,’ Hanks admitted.
‘If there was room, I would be the guy that cleans up, makes jokes, tells stories and keeps everybody entertained. I’m your man. I would probably sign up right now,’ Hanks added.

‘That might be a good idea. I’ll do all the work. I’ll clean the toilet. I’ll serve the food. I’ll fold the clothes. I’ll stow the gear. That way the others could be free to do other stuff,’ Hanks admitted.
The actor was just 13 years old on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong of the Apollo 11 NASA mission first set foot on the Moon.
‘I walked around the day of July 20, 1969, very cognisant that I was alive at a time when the history of humankind shifted,’ Hanks said.
‘We were now the generation that was alive when we landed a man on the Moon. I felt that same way about going to the Moon as people did about building the Brooklyn Bridge or the Lindbergh flight,’ Hanks explained.
Hanks, who has an estimated net worth of $400 million, was reportedly the first person that Amazon co-founder Jeff Bezos asked to join him on the New Shepherd.
‘Well, yeah, provided I pay! You know, it cost 28 million bucks or something like that,’ Hanks said on a November 2021 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live.
‘And I’m doing good, Jimmy. I’m doing good. But I ain’t paying 28 [million] bucks,’ Hanks joked.
‘You know what, we could simulate the experience of going to space right now,’ the two-time Oscar winner joked.

‘It’s about a 12-minute flight — is that about it? We could all do it in our seats right here,’ he said, asking everyone to lean back in their seats and just shake about.
‘I don’t need to spend 28 million bucks to do that. I can do that at home,’ Hanks said, and when asked if he would go for free, he said, ‘I would do it on occasion just in order to experience the joy — pretending I’m a billionaire.’
Hanks is coming off writer-director Wes Anderson’s new film Asteroid City, which hit theaters earlier this year.
He will next be seen in director Robert Zemeckis’ sweeping film Here – set in one single room and following those who have inhabited it throughout the years.
